Triumph 2000, 2500 & 2.5Pi Gearbox

The Triumph 2000 series offered four-speed manual gearboxes with optional A-type or J-type overdrive units, plus Borg-Warner automatic transmissions on some models. Manual gearboxes featured all-synchromesh operation with ratios suited to the torquey straight-six engine characteristics. The earlier A-type overdrive used a two-bolt solenoid and brass sump plug, whilst J-type units featured screw-in solenoids and rectangular finned sumps.

Manual Gearbox and Overdrive

Four-speed manual transmissions coupled to J-type overdrive units provided relaxed motorway cruising at reduced engine speeds. Reconditioning kits restore worn synchromesh rings and bearings. Proper clutch operation ensures smooth gear selection, whilst worn gearbox mountings cause excessive drivetrain movement, affecting shift quality. Oil capacity varies between 1.2 and 2.0 litres depending on overdrive fitment.

Automatic Transmission Options
