The legendary Land Rover Series 1 was eventually succeeded by the Series 2 in 1958 which continued to establish the Land Rover as a symbol of British engineering expertise. Did you know? The Series 2 and 2a Land Rovers were the first to use the well-known 2.25-litre petrol engine. This larger petrol engine produced 72 hp (54 kW) and was closely related to the 2.0-litre diesel unit still in use. This engine became the standard Land Rover unit until the mid-1980s when diesel engines became more popular.
The Land Rover Series 2 and 2a had ‘freewheeling hubs' that allowed the front wheels to spin freely when engaged. This improved the fuel efficiency on paved roads but required drivers to remember to disengage them for off-road use to maintain traction.
