The Land Rover Series 1 - the first Land Rover - marked the debut of the famous Land Rover brand. It gained global acclaim for its ruggedness and usefulness in farming, construction and the military. The Land Rover project was initiated by Maurice Wilks (chief designer at Rover Company) shortly after World War II. The Series 1 was unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948 and was initially offered in two versions: a 2-door model and a 4-door model (known as the Station Wagon). Did you know that the original Land Rover Series 1 used surplus aircraft paint from World War II on its early models? The paint was readily available and helped to keep production costs down during the postwar era. As a result, many early Land Rovers were painted in various shades of military green, giving them a distinct and practical appearance.
