Mazda MX-5 Mk1 Lubricants
Due an oil change or just topping up before a track day? Our Mazda MX-5 engine oil range covers both the 1.6 and 1.8 NA, alongside gearbox oils and greases as part of our wider MX-5 Mk1 parts catalogue.
Engine Oil, Gearbox Oil and Greases
Mazda's original guidance for the Mk1 calls for a lighter MX-5 Mk1 oil in cold weather and a slightly thicker grade once temperatures pick up, so it's worth checking the viscosity chart against your climate and driving pattern rather than defaulting to one grade year-round. A fresh oil filter should go in at every change, since running old oil through a fresh filter, or vice versa, undoes half the benefit.
The 5-speed manual box uses a separate gearbox oil to the engine, and it's easy to overlook since it doesn't need changing anywhere near as often; if you're already under the car for a gearbox inspection, it's a sensible job to do at the same time. Our Filtration range covers the air and fuel side too, so it's worth checking those together with an oil change rather than one at a time.
Greasing suspension and steering joints on schedule prevents the wear that shows up later as clunks and knocks, and it's a five-minute job once you're already under the car. If a service is overdue on more than just fluids, our Engine range covers the wider mechanical side. Call 01522 568000 for advice on the right oil and grease for your Mk1.
