Brand New OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) specification "Soft Ride" Suspension Kit. Suitable for MG TF.

Manufactured in bulk exclusively for Rimmer Bros by the original manufacturer offering great value for owners!

Originally offered as an option on UK cars towards the end of production, these were factory fit on MG Motor models and specifically designed to improve the ride quality without adversely affecting the handling of the vehicle.

Installation of this kit results in a more supple drive, eliminating the undesirable harsh suspension characteristics of the standard suspension whilst maintaining that sports car feel. Ideal for those owners who do not use their vehicles on a race track every day!

The kit contains 4 OEM complete suspension strut assembly's specifically designed to transform the characteristic harsh ride to a more comfortable ride whilst still maintaining that sports car feel. The kit also includes 4 uprated lower mounting bolts to eliminate the shortcomings of the original Rover bolt.

Rimmer Bros has invested heavily to bring these OEM kits back into the market and has had them manufactured exclusively at a price that offers exceptional value for money.

These were offered as an original factory option for MG TF, LE500 and 135PS models but can be fitted to any MG TF. The kit marginally improves ride height too, making speed bumps less of a concern to negotiate.

The dampers feature the all important and expensive lower mounting spherical bearing. This allows the damper to pivot around the bolt centre thus reducing the load placed on the single mounting bolt.

Kit also features 4 x uprated, lower damper bolts. These are hot forged and ground to a specific size eliminating any unwanted play between the bolt and the rose joint.

Why not compliment this kit by fitting a polyurethane suspension bush kit too! See part number RP1048TF or RP1048TFPB.

Can be fitted to all MGTF models. Note, if installing on MG Motor models (2007-2011) the bolts will not be utilised.

Rimmer Bros also recommend you replace the following items as a matter of course:
RNF100090 x 8 (insulator rubbers) or upgrade to Genuine Polybush RNF100090APBO x 1
NY210041 x 4 (top nut)

Testimonial:

"There are a lot of things I like about my MG TF but the harsh ride was never one of them. The Soft Ride Kit from Rimmer Bros has transformed that! I can now enjoy a drive out without the creaking, thumping and harshness of the standard suspension. The kit has also reduced road noise and gives a much more comfortable ride whilst still keeping the all-important sports car feel. I would recommend the Soft Ride Kit to all TF owners!"

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly makes this kit 'softer' than the original suspension?

The kit delivers approximately 30% softer dampening characteristics through carefully engineered spring rates and valve settings. This was achieved through extensive development by MG Rover's original engineering team to address customer feedback about the TF's firm ride.

Will fitting this kit affect my TF's handling capabilities?

No, the beauty of this kit is in its balanced engineering. While providing a more compliant ride, it maintains the TF's characteristic handling precision. You'll notice the difference most over poor surfaces, where the car feels more settled without compromising cornering ability.

I'm hearing creaking noises from my current suspension. Will this kit resolve that?

Yes. The kit includes upgraded spherical bearings and specifically engineered mounting bolts that eliminate the common causes of suspension noise. The complete assembly replacement approach ensures all potential noise sources are addressed simultaneously.

How does the ride height compare to the standard?

The kit provides a marginal increase in ride height - typically 8-10mm. This might seem subtle, but it makes a noticeable difference when navigating speed bumps and steep driveways, addressing a common criticism of the original setup.

Is this suitable for both regular and performance TF variants?

Indeed. The kit was engineered to be compatible with all TF variants, from the standard 115 through to the 160. The suspension characteristics are optimised to work with the entire model range.

What makes this different from other aftermarket solutions?

This is the actual factory-developed solution manufactured by the original OEM supplier. It's not an interpretation or copy - it's the genuine article, including several engineering improvements over the standard setup that MG Rover's own engineers developed.

My TF is my daily driver. Is this kit suitable for regular use?

Absolutely. In fact, this kit was specifically developed to make the TF more suitable for daily use. The softer ride characteristics make urban driving more comfortable while maintaining the car's sporting character for when you want to enjoy it.

Are there any maintenance considerations I should be aware of?

The kit uses high-quality components that should provide excellent service life. However, as with any suspension system, regular inspection of bushes and mountings is recommended. The upgraded components actually tend to require less maintenance than the original items.

Will I need any special tools or expertise for installation?

While the kit is designed to fit directly in place of the original components, we recommend professional installation. Spring compression and correct torque settings are critical for both safety and performance.

I'm concerned about authenticity - will this affect my car's originality?

This kit represents a factory-developed upgrade rather than a modification. It's effectively what MG Rover would have fitted if they'd had more development time before the TF's launch. It's entirely in keeping with the car's original character and engineering philosophy.

Fitting the MGF Hydragas Suspension Replacement Kit to an MGF is within the capability of an owner who is competent and familiar with working on many aspects of their car beyond simple servicing, and who has a comprehensive selection of tools and good working facilities. However, XPart recommend that it is fitted by competent motor engineers and that the fitting instructions are strictly adhered to. If in any doubt, seek professional assistance.

As a guide to professional fitting costs it is worth noting that the MG Rover time allocated for the replacement of standard displacers and dampers is listed at 2 hours per side. Fitting the MGF Hydragas Suspension Replacement Kit should occupy a similar time frame.

Note! Any seized nuts, bolts or other fixings, which is a quite reasonable expectation on a car made before 2002, will lengthen that time.

The hydragas suspension system operates at very high pressures, nominally 400psi, so has to be given respect if injury is to be avoided. This system needs to be depressurised before the hydragas components are removed and we can only advise the use of the specific hydrolastic suspension pump to complete this process, available separately as RP1165.

Vehicle Insurance
Please be aware that the majority of motor vehicle insurers will require you, the owner, to advise them of changes made to your vehicle. Owners of cars fitted with the XPart Hydragas System Replacement Kit should advise their insurers that the conversion has been carried out. Should your insurance company request it, XPart has pre-prepared a declaration that you can send to them, it can be found in Section 3, Page 15 of these Fitting Instructions.

Please note that XPart cannot guarantee that your vehicle insurance company will provide insurance as a result of the declaration.

Fitting is as a direct replacement for the original displacer, utilising the original pressed steel mounting plates. There is a slight fiddle to mount on the balljoint then offer up to the body, with the adjuster fully in. Once bolted in place the adjuster is wound out fully to set the car at the optimum standard ride height. The car can be lowered only to a point which does not interfere with the standard geometry.

The Xpart MGF Suspension Kit, designed and manufactured to be fitted as a complete system, replaces the original Hydragas displacers (Rimmer Bros will buy the old unit Hydragas displacers from you) and shock absorbers with new coil spring units (utilising the original pressed steel Hydragas mounting plates) and new matching shock absorbers.

The kit provides handling and ride characteristics somewhere between that of the MGF and the firmer, sportier ride of the coil sprung MG TF.

The kit includes four spring units (front and rear), four non-adjustable shock absorbers and comprehensive fitting instructions. Note that while the spring units are adjustable, this feature is really intended as a fitting aid and not as a means of altering the ride height of the car. Note also that the Xpart kit is not suitable for cars with lowered suspension knuckle joints.

For Australian spec vehicles, use - RP1974R or RP1975R
Frequently Asked Questions

I'm considering the conversion. What's involved in the installation process?

The conversion requires the removal of the existing Hydragas system and the installation of the new coil spring units. While it's a straightforward process for experienced mechanics, you'll need to depressurise the existing system (requiring a hydrolastic pump, available separately as RP1165). The kit uses original mounting points, with an installation time of approximately 2 hours per side for a professional mechanic.

Will this affect my car's handling characteristics?

The kit delivers a carefully engineered compromise between the original MGF and MG TF handling characteristics. You'll notice a firmer ride than the Hydragas system, but not as sporty as the TF. The kit maintains the standard geometry to ensure familiar handling characteristics.

Can I adjust the ride height?

While the kit includes height adjustment capability, this is primarily for installation purposes. It's designed to maintain the standard ride height and geometry. We strongly advise against using this feature for lowering, as it could compromise the suspension geometry.

What ongoing maintenance will the conversion require?

One of the key benefits is simplified maintenance. Unlike the Hydragas system's 400psi pressures and specialised tools, the coil spring setup requires standard suspension maintenance. Regular inspection of springs, dampers and mounting points during servicing is sufficient.

Is this suitable for my MGF?

Yes, the kit is particularly beneficial for earlier MGFs where Hydragas components may be showing their age. However, note that it's not compatible with vehicles featuring lowered suspension knuckle joints and also not suitable for Australian spec vehicles.

What's the total cost consideration, including installation?

Beyond the kit price, factor in professional installation (approximately 4 hours of labour) if you're not completing it yourself. In the long term, you'll benefit from reduced maintenance costs and readily available replacement parts.

How will this affect my insurance?

We provide a pre-prepared insurance declaration document with the kit. While most insurers accept the conversion, we recommend informing them. The documentation includes technical specifications and compliance information to support your notification.

Will I notice a difference in daily driving?

Most owners report a more consistent ride quality, particularly as the conversion eliminates the Hydragas system's tendency to become unbalanced over time. You'll experience a more direct road feel, though not as firm as an MG TF.

What's the lifespan of the new components?

The coil springs and dampers are designed to match or exceed the original component's longevity. The significant advantage is that when replacement is eventually needed, you're working with standard suspension components rather than specialised Hydragas units. All Rimmer Bros parts come with a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty as standard, unless otherwise stated.

What support is available during installation?

The kit includes comprehensive fitting instructions. We recommend photographing the original setup before beginning the conversion - it's always helpful to have a reference point.

Suitable for:
MG TF up to VIN 5D639630

Includes four Bilstein shock absorbers.

When introduced, the TF model had undergone a suspension redesign. The design team's task was to make the TF feel 'sporty' however the motoring journalists at the time and owners today comment on the TF's jittery and uncomfortable ride.

The answer is to replace the standard dampers with these premium quality units that have been specifically developed and designed for the TF model and have been tried and tested by MG owners. The reports that they provide are a very worthwhile and great improvement to both handling and ride comfort, removing the harshness from the TF ride.
