Triumph Spitfire Front Disc Brakes and Fittings (Type 12 Calipers) Mk1 and Mk2
SPITFIRE BRAKE CALIPERS
Early Mk1 Spitfires (to FC15219) used a separate mounting plate to locate the caliper to the vertical link, with the corresponding steering arm lever & stub axle, (see 'Front Suspension' for illustration).
(This caliper mounting system was originally used to convert early Herald 1200 & 12/50's from drum to disc).
This assembly was less than ideal, and at FC15220, all Mk1's were produced with modified vertical links that allowed the caliper to mount directly (discarding the separate mounting plate), along with a revised steering arm lever and a strengthened stub axle.
Please check the type of caliper fitted.
Mk1 & Mk2
Girling type 12 calipers
Mk3, MkIV & 1500
Girling type 14 calipers
It is possible that the calipers could have been replaced (with non-original spec') by a previous owner. If you are in any doubt, please phone with as much information as possible, vehicle details & caliper type.
