Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 2.2 and 2.4 Puma engine?

The 2.4-litre Puma engine was fitted to Defenders from 2007 to 2011, while the 2.2-litre replaced it from 2011 until production ended in 2016, mainly to meet tighter Euro 5 emissions rules. The 2.2 dropped the swirl flap mechanism that caused reliability problems on the 2.4, making it the more dependable of the two units. Both engine variants share the same basic control cable and heater cable fitments across the Puma range.

Are Land Rover Defenders going up in value?

Classic Defenders, particularly Puma models built before production ended in 2016, have seen strong and sustained value increases as demand for original, unmodified examples has grown. Vehicles in good condition with full service history and properly functioning original systems, including control and heater cables, tend to command the strongest prices. Keeping a Defender running correctly with quality replacement parts helps protect that value over time.

Which is better, the Defender TD5 or the Puma?

The Td5 (1998-2006) uses an electronically controlled five-cylinder engine, while the Puma (2007-2016) introduced a more modern, quieter Ford-derived diesel paired with a six-speed gearbox. The Puma is generally seen as more refined and comfortable, though the Td5 is often favoured by owners who want a simpler vehicle that is easier to maintain at home. Which one suits a buyer better really comes down to whether refinement or mechanical simplicity matters more to them.

What makes a Defender a Puma?

Puma is the name given to Defender models built between 2007 and 2016, identified by their Ford-derived 2.4 or 2.2-litre diesel engines, six-speed manual gearbox, and a redesigned interior with revised heater controls. These updates replaced the older Td5 engine and five-speed gearbox used in earlier Defenders. The Puma generation also introduced the specific control cable and heater cable assemblies fitted to these later models.
