Triumph TR2 Tyres
Triumph TR2 tyres are sized for 15-inch wheels. The original crossply specification was 5.50x15 on a 4-inch rim, with factory pressures of 24 psi front and 26 psi rear, rising to 26 and 28 psi respectively for sustained high-speed running. The practical radial replacement today is 155R15 or 165R15. Of the two, 165HR15 is the most widely used choice among TR2 owners, as it maintains a similar overall diameter to the original crossply and is available in a good selection of period-correct compounds.
Original TR2 steel and wire wheels were designed for use with inner tubes. Many modern replacement wire wheels are manufactured as tubeless wheels, so always follow the manufacturer's recommendation.
The handbook pressures of 24 psi front and 26 psi rear were set for crossply tyres and do not apply to modern radials. On 165R15 tyres, those figures will leave the tyres looking flat and the steering feeling heavy. Most owners find that 28 to 32 psi all around suits radials well. Start at 28 psi, check the tread wear across the full width and adjust as needed. Most owners running 165R15 radials find 28 to 32 psi all around works well.
Our Triumph TR2-5 wheels section covers wire wheels, wire wheel conversion kits, steel wheels, Classic 8-spoke alloys and Revolution alloys. If suspension geometry needs attention alongside a tyre change, our TR2-5 suspension and steering improvements and TR2-5 front suspension sections cover the full range. For everything else, our Triumph TR2-5 section covers all models.
