SPITFIRE RADIATORS - Original specification summary:
Early Mk1’s (to FC39925) had a 22” wide radiator (with 2 top hose connections) and a separate (steel) remote header tank with a 7lb pressure cap. Because of ‘over cooling’ the header tank was removed at FC39926 and a new radiator (still 22” wide) but with only 1 top hose connection was used. The overflow pipe now came from the pressure cap neck on the radiator and fed into a plastic overflow bottle located in front of the radiator. The same cooling system - 22” wide radiator with a 7lb pressure cap - was used for all Mk2’s.
All Mk3’s were produced with a 16” wide radiator fitted with side extensions (allowing the same Mk1/Mk2 mounting cradle to be used). Mk3’s from FD48653 had a more efficient 16” radiator with a 13lb pressure cap. The MkIV & 1500 retained the 16” radiator and 13lb pressure cap.
Replacement Radiators:
16” radiators - (recon’ fitted with new core) can be used for all applications using the narrower fitting providing the correct pressure cap is used (NOTE: they are not supplied with the side extensions so you will need to re-use the existing extensions).
22” radiators - With the exception of very early Mk1’s (with 2 top hose connections & separate header tank), our 22” full width radiators are suitable for ALL models (except late USA vehicles) with correct pressure cap. Although late USA models were originally fitted with a 22” wide radiator, they CANNOT be interchanged with a UK spec’ 22” radiator as the 13lb pressure (filler) cap for USA vehicles is located on the Water Pump/ Thermostat Housing, NOT on the radiator.
