Now for the detail, starting where the story began.
MX5 NA (Mk1): where it all began
The original NA ran from 1989 to 1997 with 1.6 and 1.8 litre engines, and it's the purest of the bunch. These engines turn a timing belt, so a belt change sits at the top of the list. Our MX5 NA (Mk1) maintenance kits cover the routine consumables. An engine service kit for Mazda MX5 NA models hands you the filters and plugs for a basic service in an afternoon. When the belt's due, an MX5 timing belt kit brings the belt and tensioner together, so nothing slips through the net. Got a gearbox seal that's started to weep? An MX5 repair kit such as an oil seal set is the tidy way to put it right.
MX5 NB (Mk2 and Mk2.5): the sensible one
The NB arrived in 1998 and ran to 2005, with the facelifted Mk2.5 from 2001. Mechanically it's a close cousin of the NA, so the same thinking applies. It's another timing belt engine that rewards a planned belt change. The clutch will ask for a fresh MX5 clutch kit when the pedal starts to feel vague. Summer is where this car comes alive, roof down on a warm evening. If you want an MX5 air conditioning kit, the closest part we stock is the Revotec air conditioning cooling fan: an electric fan sized for cars with air con that keeps the engine cool when town traffic builds up.
MX5 NC (Mk3): no belt to worry about
The NC, built from 2005 to 2015, changed the recipe. Its 1.8 and 2.0 litre MZR engines moved to a timing chain, so there's no belt to swap on a schedule. That shifts what goes in your kit.
Servicing the NC
An MX5 NC maintenance kit leans on filters, oil, plugs and the usual consumables instead of belts. A proper MX5 Mk3 maintenance kit will be specced for the bigger engines. The maintenance kit MX5 Mk3 NC owners reach for is always matched to engine size. So check yours first. The chain itself is tough and usually outlasts a belt by a wide margin. For the rare rebuild after big miles, a full timing chain kit is available too.
Sensible NC upgrades
The NC is also a favourite for tasteful upgrades. An MX5 NC clutch kit, standard or uprated, freshens up the drive. And an MX5 Mk3 induction kit from Ramair or K&N adds a touch of intake bark. It helps the engine breathe, all for modest money.
MX5 ND (Mk4): the modern classic
The latest ND landed in 2015 with SkyActiv power, again running a chain. So servicing stays in filters and oil territory. Clutch kits are on hand when the day comes. The same approach holds: routine MX5 maintenance first, the bigger stuff as the miles add up. Whatever sits on your drive, putting together your own MX5 maintenance kit means you're never caught out halfway through a Sunday job.
