US Launch
By the time Range Rover was introduced to the American market (in March 1987), UK production of the vehicle had been in full swing for 17 years. A lot of 'refinements' had been made to the Range Rover in that time - four doors and multi-point fuel injection to name but two - until Land Rover felt that the vehicle was finally suitable for US launch. Nevertheless, market researchers at Land Rover believed that American customers would have different requirements to European buyers, so the specification of USAbound Range Rovers reflected this.
As it transpires, Land Rover had misjudged their home market somewhat, as the new luxury specification for American Range Rover customers was exactly what European buyers wanted too. The two markets weren't so very different: what one was offered, the other would inevitably ask for.
NAS Vehicle Information
The chassis number system for NAS vehicles is sligthly different from UK & European specification Range Rovers. Nevertheless, The 17-figure chassis number used on these vehicles still contains all the necessary information relating to specification and period of manufacture. As with UK spec vehicles, the last-but-one letter of the chassis number relates to the year the vehicle was built, as follows:
HA00001: 1987 model year
JA00001: 1988 model year
KA00001: 1989 model year
LA00001: 1990 model year
MA00001: 1991 model year
NA00001: 1992 model year
PA00001: 1993 model year
RA00001: 1994 model year
SA00001: 1995 model year
NAS Supplement
NAS Range Rovers, then, are not dissimilar to European models. This section covers the North American Range Rover market, to highlight the differences. It is for using in addition to, rather than instead of, the main catalogue. It is laid out in the same order as the main catalogue; therefore, use the main catalogue to identify the parts you require, then refer to the supplement for possible differences. There may be a number of circumstances where the parts listed in this section are the same as those listed for that year in the main catalogue. The reason for this duplication is that the chassis number change-point will be different for NAS vehicles.
