Fitting your 4 cylinder TR with a
narrow fan belt.
There are several reasons why you should change from the original, wide belt to a narrow one; one is that of course you are always going to have more luck finding and buying a narrow belt (3/8" belts have been the standard for automotive use for many years) when you need one for servicing and repairs. There's also the fact that being what the industry almost always specified, the narrow belt benefits from years of development to make it more efficient and reliable.
If you're feeling particularly protective towards your engine, the damped narrow belt option gives you the opportunity to protect the crankshaft by significantly reducing harmonic shock waves. This does entail the elimination of the mechanical cooling fan and fan extension and the substitution of an electric cooling fan when the original crank pulley is replaced by the new damped pulley. However, you do end up with a 'win-win' situation here because not only do you get a far better and more easily serviced fan belt on your car, but you also vastly improve the efficiency of the cooling system (the Achilles Heel of a 4 cylinder TR) too. For owners who want a narrow belt system but don't want to go as far as losing their friendly old mechanical cooling fan, an undamped narrow belt system can be chosen instead.

Triumph TR4A-250 Factory Option Front Anti Roll Bar
Fitting the
optional anti-roll bar assembly, which became a standard fitment on TR6, is a very worthwhile conversion to carry out on TR4As, TR5s and TR250s not equipped with it already. These models of course share in every other respect exactly the same suspension as their later TR stablemate, making the conversion incredibly easy.
The only adaptation of the car that may be required is for the mounting U bolts. Some cars may still be fitted with the earlier style of radiator shield (to which the mountings attach), which is correct in shape but requires piercing to accept the U bolts. Alternatively, the early shield may be swapped for either of the later ready-pierced items (part no. 213021 - see 'Chassis' for details - or TKC1972, the very late TR6 variant).
However it's likely that on the majority of cars the piercings will already be present, due to radiator shields being swapped between models over the years.

Fed up with your intermittent wipers not being intermittent enough? Does it drive you mad when you give the screen a quick spray and it wipes for ages?
Fit this
new relay in place of the standard AMR2341 to your vehicle to solve this problem . Once fitted you press the stalk down so that the wiper wipes and then back off again, now count/wait till you want another wipe, switch the stalk down and leave it on, this timing will now remain constant till you set another timing the same way or turn off the ignition at which point the relay reverts to a standard 6 second wipe interval. Another bonus is that the wipers will now only wipe once following a short burst of washer fluid or 3 times after a long burst.
This will work on all Defenders with the latching intermittent wiper stalk PRC7370 or AMR6106 HA onwards (stays down when pressed) but it will also work on 300Tdi and Td5 although on post 2002 Td5s the relay AMR2341 is located behind the speedo. Will not work with early stalk PRC3900 up to GA models.

When replacing the steering lock on 1995 to 2002 Range Rover please be aware that the coil attached to the ignition barrel is no longer available . It will be necessary to re-use the coil from the existing donor lock by carefully removing the black and green cap from the from the barrel by easing the three locking tangs. Care must be taken not to damage the coil and its windings. The tangs on the green cap are vulnerable and could break ( a new green cap is supplied with the kit) The coil must then be separated from the green cap and the micro switch removed from the lock barrel by extracting the two roll pins ( new pins are supplied with the kit). Reverse the removal procedure using the original coil assembly and the new parts supplied in the kit to complete the repair.

As Winter is upon us, Rover 75 / MG ZT owners shouldcheck the vehicle's plenum drains for blockages. There have been reports of electrical glitches where the problem has been traced to water ingress into the ECU or other electrical items. One noted on a diesel Rover 75/MGZT-T; the rear wiper operated as the engine was turned off. The fault was traced to water ingress into the glow plug relay, which is just next to/slightly under the ECU. Several other similar 'glitches' that have been traced back to water ingress into this relay. It appears that electrical 'noise' is being introduced into the K-Bus, which in turn interferes with the BCU. This interference can also cause issues with T4 diagnostics not communicating with the BCU or ECU.

How to bed in your new brakes - Information supplied by EBC
Drive your vehicle steadily within the first 300-400 miles of road use only using the brakes violently in case of emergency. During this time use the brakes lightly and intermittently to achieve a matching between the pad and rotor which we call break in or bed in.
The speed with which perfect brake in will have occurred depends on how often the brakes are used. If you drive on a freeway or motorway and do not use your brakes for miles at a time, break in periods will be much longer. Using the brakes with caution during their early life will extend their wear life and greatly reduce the chances of rotor vibration or “shimmying” as it is known in the States. During the bed in time the pads will only contact the disc on a limited area until tiny irregularities in machining or misalignment of the pads against the rotor have been removed. You can easily see how far you have progressed with bedding in your new brakes by looking through the wheel spokes and evaluating pad contact. The rotor should look shiny and smooth across its surfaces from outside to inside in all areas of the rotor. If you have purchased EBC gold zinc or black zinc coated sport slotted rotors, all of these coatings should have been visibly removed across the entire braking area of the rotor. Break in times on European vehicles is usually considerably longer than on Asian or US built vehicles because of the design of the brake system. European vehicles use a “taller” brake pad and may tend to contact on the outer edges of the rotor first and gradually contact more towards the centre of the axle over the first few hundred miles. After you are confident that the pads and discs are perfectly mated, use the brakes on a quiet and safe road 5-6 times at medium pressure bringing the car from 60mph to 10mph. Drive the vehicle for a few miles to allow the brakes to cool and repeat this procedure. During this final break in a brake odour will almost certainly appear and this is perfectly normal. This is known as green fade where the surface resins within the pad finally cure and burn off.
This bed in procedure is for STREET driving only. For race use bed in please see notes inside the package.

The most common problems affecting TR6's these days is their low usage and the periods that they spend in storage. Even in dry garages the inside of the
fuel tank may corrode shedding fine iron sediment as soon as the car is moved. Once corrosion has started it may be more expensive to cure/eradicate than the cost of a new tank.
If a problem is suspected, the tank may have to be flushed by filling and draining several times. Another common ailment is caused by water, which will sit at the bottom of the tank, under the fuel and cause corrosion. This may actually get as far as the engine when it will cause havoc to a metering unit or
injector.
The P.i. system may need pressure checking at several points to identify a problem. The
PRV should 'blow' at 105-110 PSI, and there should be over 90 PSI at the metering unit outlets. Injectors pop at 45-55 PSI. Rebuilt injectors are tested to perform within this pressure window and spray an even cone of fuel.

Antifreeze Matters
Land Rover's original specification antifreeze prolongs component life to save you money. Some antifreeze on the market can do more harm than good. Land Rover's extra long-life
antifreeze is non silica based so there's no sand abrasion on engines and seals, and there won't be any silica caking to impair radiator performance. You can be assured that by choosing Land Rover
antifreeze you will be protecting the performance of your engine and avoiding corrosion and incorrect engine temperatures which might cause radiator leaks, wear on the water pump and seals, gasket deterioration and engine calibration issues.

When washing your vehicle many household detergents actually strip polish from paintwork, leaving the surface dull and unprotected. Some contain salt which may induce corrosion. Use a product designed for the job. Before shampooing, if possible, hose down vehicle to loosen and remove excess grime. Use a soft automotive sponge. If you drop your sponge ensure it does not contain grit which will otherwise scratch the paintwork. Work from the top of the vehicle downwards, completing one side at a time and leaving the wheels until last. If possible, finally flood rinse the whole vehicle with a gently running hose. Residual water can be removed using an Autoglym Aqua-Dry synthetic leather. Finally don't leave the vehicle parked up with wet brakes as the discs and pads will rust together.

Wiper Blades are one of the most neglected components on vehicles today. Many
Wiper Blades are cracked, split, torn, brittle, worn or otherwise in obvious need of replacement. Others may look okay but do a poor job of wiping when actually put to the test. To check the "Trim height" which is measured from the centre of the front wheel vertically up to the wheelarch lip. The tyre pressures should be correct and the vehicle should be parked on a level surface, unladen but with a full fuel tank and the spare wheel should be in its correct storage position. The vehicle should not have been driven for at least two hours. With the steering straight ahead and the handbrake off, bounce the vehicle a few times, allow it to settle and then roll it forward one revolution of the wheels. Bounce the front of the vehicle , allow it to settle, then measure the trim heights. They should be within the following specifications MGF non trophy models 370mm ± 10mm at 20°C, MGF Trophy Models 350mm ± 10mm at 20°C. This is based on recommended figure of 0.6mm per 1°C. Also check one side should not be any more than 10mm different to the other side.

Triumph Rocker Feed Kit
Excessive rocker shaft wear is a classic complaint about the Triumph push rod engines. The external rocker feed kit is an effective and easy to fit solution to the problem. It works by piping oil from a plug hole in the cylinder block main oil gallery up to the cylinder head, thereby maintaining a higher oil flow installation. The kit is so good, it looks as though it should always have been there!
The Rocker Feed Kit and Oil Consumption
When the supplementary oil feed to the rocker gear is fitted, an increase in oil consumption is often encountered. This is attributed to oil being drawn down worn valve guides. The extra amount of lubricating oil flowing through the valve and rocker chamber, as supplied by the feed kit, exaggerates any tendency for oil to be sucked down worn valve guides past worn valve stems.
The best solution is to fit new valves and guides, but this is not always on the top of the repair priority list. To assist in the reduction of oil being sucked down the guides a method of valve stem oil seal is required. We offer the simple do-nut rubber ring that is used so successfully on MG sports cars. Its part number is
AEK113, one per valve stem. Now the clever bit... How to fit them without removing the cylinder head from the car?
Each seal needs to be fitted to the valve stem above the valve guide but below the valve spring upper retaining cap(s). Remove the rocker cover, rocker gear and the spark plugs. Cover the holes that the push rods come up through so nothing can be dropped down into the engine. Turn the crankshaft so that number one piston is at bottom dead centre (BDC). Feed a length of clean, pliable rope down the spark plug hole of number one cylinder, leaving a bit hanging out so you can retrieve it. Now, slowly and carefully turn the crankshaft clockwise by hand, a resistance will be felt as the rising piston in that bore compresses the rope against the combustion faces of the two valves in that cylinder, holding them against their seats. The valve collets and spring caps of that cylinder can now be removed without the fear of losing the valves down the bore. The valve stem oil seals can be fitted to these two valve stems and perhaps a new set of valve springs. Be honest, this tip has saved the cost of a decoke set! Once the valve stem oil seals and other parts have been refitted to this first pair of valves satisfactory, simply turn the crank anticlockwise to BDC, withdraw the rope and repeat the process on the remaining cylinders and pairs of valves. To be sure that the rope has compressed sufficiently against the faces of the valves, attempt to push the valves by hands, as if being acted on by the rockers before removing the spring caps or collets, this is the fail safe check. This method can be adopted anywhere as it does not require the use of compressed air, special tools or luck.

Triumph TR4A to TR6 Chassis Assembly - Strengthening Lower Wishbone Arm Brackets
The lower front inner wishbone brackets which are welded to the chassis are considered weak points of the front suspension as they are often found to be cracked of even broken away from the chassis. This is usually caused by running into pot holes or hitting kerbs. These brackets are easily replaced by a competent chassis repair workshop, and represent a considerable improvement to the earlier TR2/3/3A and TR4 design. It's a good idea to periodically check these brackets, and have them replaced or reinforced if they are cracked or broken, as this condition presents a severe safety hazard.
We have followed a design from Triumph themselves and produced a strengthening kit which comprises three plates that are welded to the inner wishbone bracket and the chassis.

Tubular manifolds by design produce a vast amount of heat in the engine compartment. This increases the possibility of electrical/ignition components not working effectively and promotes a higher risk of fire (if any combustible material comes in to contact with the manifold), not to mention the likelihood of severe burns when working on the engine!
By wrapping your tubular manifold with Thermo-Tec insulating wrap you can overcome all these risk factors. Thermo-Tec keeps the heat within the exhaust manifold so the exhaust gases have a much higher velocity, this induces negative pressure (scavenging) which increases air intake flow, resulting in better performance & economy.
Technical Notes: Thermo-Tec heat wrap – which is race & rally proven – comes in
rolls 2” wide x 50 feet long and moulds to the contours of the manifold. Being a Silica based fabric (it does not contain asbestos or carcinogens) it is unaffected by oil or water, withstands temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius and reduces under bonnet temperatures by up to 70%.

Land Rover Discovery and Defender diesels have a
sedimenter on the chassis behind the right rear wheel. It should be drained every 12,000 miles or 2 years. With the wheel off disconnect the multiplug, place a bowl underneath and unscrew the sedimenter by hand until water flows out. Screw it back in when fuel comes out. If however nothing comes out it is blocked so will need removing from the filter to clean it.

This is located under the plug on top, you can remove and clea n it in situ. If the Overdrive works but will not stay in, you may have low pressure (extra washers in the relief valve should help) or a worn clutch (check for clutch lining fibres in the filter) try a
reconditioned exchange replacement or a
complete exhange unit.

Is the air suspension pump on your Range Rover P38A noisy? It may simply need a new set of rubber mounting bushes which isolate the unit from the bodywork and absorb the vibration produced by the compressor. These harden and wear after a period of time. While you're at it why not treat your compressor to a new air filter (it's probably never been changed!).

The following tip applies to Rover 75 and MG ZT 04 Model Year vehicles only (VIN 4D307061 onwards). Previously XPart has supplied the complete gearchange assembly to repair faults arising in the mechanism. Unfortunately XPart currently has no supply of the complete assembly. However research and feedback from the AutoService centre network has shown that the faults rarely lie within the mechanism itself but are actually with the cables. XPart has now successfully re-engineered the cables and they are available individually The part numbers of the two cables are:
ULS000021 and ULS000031.

It is a sad fact that it’s likely the air suspension on your Discovery 2 will fail - probably at the most inconvenient time possible. You then have a choice to make. Do you replace it with a new air spring system which is comfortable but not so comfortable on your wallet or replace with an equally comfortable but much more affordable and reliable coil spring system? We have the complete kit for air to coil spring conversion making your decision that little bit easier.

Give your Land Rover Freelander an easy ride and help prevent premature drive-train failure. Because Freelander 1 is not equipped with a centre differential it is sensitive to the rolling radius of each wheel from front to back. You can help your Freelanders drive-train by matching the tyres front and back for both tread type and wear. Try swapping the front and back wheels around on a regular basis to ensure even wear all round.

Rover 800 M series 2.0 litre engine. Hesitation on acceleration? Gone down all the electrical routes but still no better? The problem could be due to sticking valves. Later engines (T series) have waisted stem valves to overcome the problem. Try running the engine at idle speed while stationary with a good quality
engine flush in it for about 5 minutes, drain it out, replace the
oil filter and refill with new engine oil. All the deposits should have been dissolved and the valves freed!
