The Discovery 2 - given the name Discovery Series II to evoke the history of the original Land Rover Series vehicles - was first previewed in the USA at a special Land Rover 50th Anniversary event at LRNA's Lanham HQ on 30 April 1998.
Then in June, a pair of Discovery 2 vehicles (one V8i and one Td5) left London to embark on 'the longest test-drive in history' to prove the new Discovery's credentials as a Land Rover and at the time as the 'Most Advanced 4x4xFar'. By the end of this test drive, the vehicles had covered 19,152 miles and 27 countries in just 58 days. The Discovery Series II was unveiled to the public at the Paris Motor Show on 29 September 1998.
