TR8 Brakes
Your TR8 deserves stopping power that matches its V8 performance. Whether you're restoring this rare British V8 sports car or seeking enhanced braking capability, we've got the TR8 brake components you need to keep your classic safe and responsive.
What brake components are available for the TR8?
The TR8's unique left-hand drive configuration requires specific brake parts that differ from standard TR7 components. The TR8 brake system features larger 2-pot front calipers and specific rear wheel cylinders, designed to handle the extra power from the 3.5-litre V8 engine.
We stock original brake pads (GBP242), both standard and uprated Kevlar versions for improved performance. The front brake calipers come as right-hand (AAU7960) and left-hand (AAU7961) specific units, complete with rebuild kits available for maintenance.
For the rear brake system, we carry the correct wheel cylinders (GWC1213) and rebuild kits (GRK2014). The brake servo unit (AAU7925) is also available, along with its complete rebuild kit (AAU7924) and mounting gasket (CRC250).
Why should I consider uprated brake kits for my TR8?
Rimmer Bros offers uprated brake kits specifically designed for the TR8, providing significantly improved stopping power compared to the original system. These kits typically feature 4-pot calipers with larger brake disc surfaces.
The brake pad surface area comparison between standard TR7 brakes and uprated kits shows a dramatic improvement in braking efficiency. The uprated kits use larger brake discs and multi-piston calipers, delivering consistent performance even under demanding conditions.
Our uprated brake master cylinder and servo assembly (RB7656) works perfectly with these enhanced systems. This modified Rover servo fits the TR7/8 chassis, providing the additional brake boost needed for the larger brake components.
How do I maintain my TR8 brake system properly?
Regular brake maintenance keeps your TR8 stopping safely. Start by checking brake fluid levels monthly - we stock both standard DOT 3 (GBF103) and high-performance silicone brake fluids in 0.5-litre (RX1327) and 1-litre (RX1326) containers.
Brake hose condition is crucial for pedal feel and safety. Our TR8 parts selection includes stainless steel braided brake hoses that offer firmer brake pedal pressure. The complete car set (RB2011) includes front flexible hoses (GBH418GR) and rear flexible hose (GBH219GR).
For brake disc maintenance, original TR8 brake discs (TKC3157) are available when replacement becomes necessary. We also stock brake cleaner (GBF901) for proper component cleaning during servicing.
What makes TR8 brakes different from TR7 brakes?
The TR8's V8 engine produces considerably more power than the TR7's four-cylinder unit, necessitating an enhanced brake system. TR8 brake components are specifically designed for the additional weight and performance of the V8 engine.
The TR8 uses different wheel cylinders compared to early TR7 models, with the 11/16" bore cylinders (071-522) fitted to 5-speed and late automatic TR8s from VIN 402001. These provide appropriate braking force distribution for the V8's characteristics.
The brake master cylinder bore diameter also differs, with TR8 systems using 20.6mm bore units. Our repair kits (180-785 for AP Braking applications, 180-786 for aftermarket units) ensure proper rebuild specifications are maintained.
