This is a precision ground steel sleeve which should be pressed into the constant pinion gear to enable the proper fitment of bearing 145008 and therefore allowing imperial nosed mainshafts to be compatible with the later metric bore constant pinion gear (part no. 219126).

The brass second gear bush used to 1973 often breaks where its flange joins the cylindrical body. This breakage leads to excessive end float in the second and third gears, which in turn causes severe and rapid mechanical failure. A two piece steel bush and thrust washer is offered as an uprated replacement for the one piece brass item. The two piece steel bush set can not be used to replace the steel top hat shaped bush of the post 1973 gearboxes.

The rear end of the shaft and gearbox became 'metric', so this conversion would be quite difficult. These uprated laygears come complete with 3 bearings and fittings. The twin bearing fitted to the rear end, each have twice the load capacity of the original (150339). They fit the standard gearbox and layshaft, so no modifications are required. If your gearbox has suffered such a failure, you will appreciate this as a fit and forget solution.

Triumph TR3B (TCF) TR4-4A-5-250 Interchanging Components - 4 Synchro
The internal components of the 4 synchro gearbox changed hardly at all during TR3B, TR4, TR4A, TR5 and TR250 production.  The problems of which replacement parts to fit really arise if you find you have a TR6 gearbox in your car - in which case the internal components changed several times during production.  Changes that are crucial are those that mean whole running assemblies must be changed rather than individual components.  Above is a table showing the gearboxes by serial number and the changes to internal components.  The four basic sets of gears are interchangeable sets, the mainshaft will of course govern their use ultimately if overdrive is used.  The most significant and frequent changes were to the helix or tooth angel of the gears - 3 in the life of the TR6!  The spigot size on the mainshaft changed from imperial to metric which required matching constant pinion gears.
