Triumph Stag Vehicle Information

Triumph Stag

Key Dates for Stag Production
These figures are reproduced from the book ‘Original Triumph Stag - The Restorer’s Guide’ with the kind permission of MBI Publishing Co & James Taylor. Note: Rate of production varied because Stags were built in small batches, it is therefore important to use caution when attempting to date a car from these figures. LD is Triumph code for all Non-Federal Stags. LE is Triumph code Federal Stags from approx. 1972, early Federal cars had LD prefix.

LD45722 24th June 1977 Very Last Stag
1: The earliest build record found in this sequence is actually for car 10004.

2: Build sanctions always overlapped. Thus, the first cars with the specification agreed for the 'second-sanction' (e, 1972 models) started coming off the lines before orders for 'first-sanction' cars had been fulfilled.
3: The last Stag eligible for road tax exemption under current UK regulations is therefore LD21086.
*: Until August 1976, Stags were built in batches on the TR6 production lines. When TR6 production ended, Stag production was transferred to the Innsbruck line (2000/2500 Saloon) production lines.

Commission Numbers
All Stags are identified by a unique commission number, which is found on a metal plate attached to the left hand door shut pillar. This plate is a vital piece of evidence reference the cars original build specification for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the commission number itself will reveal the approximate date of manufacture. On Federal cars, the month and year of manufacture are actually stamped on the plate (for all models the actual day of of completion can be determined for a small fee by contacting the; ‘Heritage Motor Centre’ Gaydon on +44 1926 641188). Second the commission number tells you what transmission was fitted originally. Third, the plate is stamped with a pair of two or three-digit codes that identify the original paint & trim colours.

The commission number is stamped into the plate. A typical example would be LD 31205 BW. This can be broken down into three elements;
Prefix (LD), Serial Number (31205), and suffix (BW).

Commission Prefix Letters LD Triumph code for all Non-Federal Stags. 1972, early Federal cars had LD prefix
LE Triumph code Federal Stags from approx. 1972
Commission Serial Numbers 1 to 3900 1971 Mk1 models. (Pre-production cars built during the 1970 model year were also numbered in this sequence.)
10001 to 14158 1972 Mk1 models. (Sales records exist for Federal cars in the sequence LE 7502 to LE8901, but build records for these cars have not been found.)
  20001 to 25432 1973 Mk2 models.
  30001 to 36714 1974 & 1975 Mk2 models.
  40001 to 45722 1976 & 1977 Mk2 models

A small plate attached to the front body crossmember beside the LH bonnet hinge carries the body number, it is of no value whatsoever when ordering spares. Body numbers begin at ‘T 001 LD’ and do not match commission numbers, though in most cases they are very close. Body No sequence is as follows, only start numbers are given as final numbers are not known.

T 001 LD 1971-1972 Mk1 models. (Inc pre-production cars built in the 1970 model year.)
T 20001 LD 1973 Mk2 models.
T 30001 LD 1974-1975 Mk2 models.
T 40001 LD 1976-1977.

On early engines the engine number is stamped on a cast-boss between the two rearmost spark plugs on the LH cyl bank. From October 1971 it is stamped at the back of the cylinder block - between the distributor and the bellhousing. A typical example would be LF 11246 HE. This breaks down into 3 elements; Prefix (LF), Serial number (11246), Suffix (HE).

Engine Prefix Letters
LF All markets except USA
LE USA Federal specification
Engine Suffix Letters

HEA High comp' for type 65 Auto
HEBW High comp' for type 35 Auto
UE USA Federal specification
UEBW USA Federal with type 35 box

Manual Gearbox - Manual gearboxes are stamped with a serial No beginning LD1. This sequence was used for all gearboxes except on US Federal cars: 1972 season US gearboxes began with LE 10001, and 1973 season US gearboxes with LE 20001.

Auto Gearbox - The serial number of the Borg-Warner auto gearbox is stamped on the makers plate attached to the gearbox casing. 'Type 35' gearboxes have a purple plate, and 'type 65's' have a green plate.

Differential - Diff/axle numbers are stamped on the underside of the rear casing. They are all in the same series, which begins with LS1.
